Are you sure that's Lugae and not Belknab, or some similar name? I have my doubts. Isn't Lugae a shriveled looking science type guy?

Good work though.

steve, you disappoint me. balnab is indeed lugae's giant killer robot, but after you defeat balnab lugae turns into a giant robot himself. i figured if lugae were going to take on the likes of Savory Cruller he'd transform into robot battle mode.

glad you liked it.

Your first sentence is beyond hurtful. Your picture is of an enemy called Belnab-Z which is controlled by Lugae but is not something that Lugae turns into, as in a physical metamorphism. I refer you to this page which should vindicate my position http://www.ffonline.com/ff4/bosses2.htm

we certainly are. i didn't mean to hurt you, but I'M RIGHT!!!

"If you leave Lugae standing after defeating Balnab, Lugae will eventually take control of Balnab himself to become Balnab-Z."

lugae is doing the becoming in this sentence. is the incredible hulk bruce banner? i would say yes. you might disagree. but the fight poster may still be accurate, since clearly if wretched lugae were to get into a fight he'd use some kind of robot.

geeky beyond fuck.

Two items, first there is a single physical image in the game that is identified as Lugae, and you have not used it. Second, I believe that the sentence you quote indicates that your enemy is no longer called Lugae but now called Belnab-Z, I do not believe that it indicates that the physical entity known as Lugae has ceased to exist and all that is left is a new form he has assumed called Belnab-Z. Ergo, you should have used the shriveled science guy. And further, the quote "wretched lugae" clearly refers to the shriveled dude.

Steve <...> wrote:

sure, but that's a physical transformation of one being into another, not the equivalent of a midget climbing into R2D2 and working some controls.

i'm pretty sure that lugae physically transforms into balnab-z. that's why balnab has hair, and his head is shaped differently. if lugae just climbed into balnab the robot's physical form wouldn't change.

maximum geeky!!!

matt

besides, the pictures of dr. lugae are too small to make for an exciting prizefight poster.

I find the physical transformation angle unlikely. I reluctantly accept your p.s. explanation and will speak of this no further.

Well, despite the embarrassing level of nerdQ displayed on all sides, I suppose that would be all right.

Also one final thought. Milon-Z is the only other "Z" monster, and that seems to just be Milon with a different image, leading me to believe that Belnab-Z is in fact Belnab with Lugae at the controls, not Lugae himself, who would presumably be called "Lugae-Z"

"fuck" is not geeky, actually. unless i'm doing it wrong.

As an alternative comparison to the Hulk, consider Krang of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Krang alone was a giant brain thing. Krang in his big metal robot was a giant brain thing operating the controls of a big monster robot, not Krang morphing into a big monster robot a la Hulk. While Steve makes a good point regarding the name change, I still come down on Matt's side that if there is a tangible alteration in Belnab whilst becoming Belnab-Z, enough Lugae remains in it to justify it's presence in the crullest battle of them all.

By the bye, thought you'd be interested to know that cruller is now my work wallpaper. My coworkers already think I'm weird, and patients don't come in here, so what the hell?

I have no idea what the hell you were talking about in your blog, but "geeky as fuck" is by far the funniest phrase I've heard all day. And that's even after an episode of "Last Comic Standing".

so it seems steve wins not only the lugae / balnab debate but also the battle for the audience's laughter. wretched lugae.

Damn... I just got back from the Comic-con in which I had to listen to a debate about the qualities of Battle Star Galactica Vs. Lord of the Rings from two geeks wearing Gandolf for Prez buttons but damn! You guys could be the head of that geekocracy! I don't even know what game you are talking about!

it's final fantasy iv, or final fantasy ii for us round-eyes.

Most of the people who are posting on this don't know me, but this conversation is only the tip of the iceberg for my level of geekiness. I'll also say that I'm surprised at the reaction to "geeky as fuck", I would have thought that would have been an unremarkable extension of a common modifier. Last, was that Holohan conceding defeat in comment #6? This surprises me most of all.

i may have been hasty to admit defeat. without re-opening the debate, i'll point out that there's a third stage to the lugae battle, in which you fight "lugaborg," a skeletal robot with a version of lugae's name. the battle with lugaborg is identified as "The second battle against Lugae" in the fansite given above.

this doesn't conclusively prove my argument, but i think it at least shows that lugae has the ability to turn into a robot. whether he turns into balnab-z is a question for the ages. or the programmers.

Geeky as fuck was one of those conversational staples that had to be pruned once I was in the classroom. If you find yourself in mixed company, but still need to describe something geeky beyond most human measure, may I suggest these dorky-big hybrid word as substitutes?

nerdtastic
geeknormous
dorkgantic (thanks Chun)

I feel I must post something in response to this, but I've been left utterly speechless. Is the cruller actually savory? Is that an excepted form of cruller?

My my appetite has been piqued by the idea of a non-sweet doughnuts.

Oh, and I would pay good coin to see the FF animation of the cruller busting out some bad-ass spell, or perhaps flying through the air to deliver a devastating blow to the like of the Lugae or Belnab, or whateverthefuckitis.

I think the cruller's spell should involve a sugary glaze, which either slows the opponent down in a frozen/sticky way, or which the opponent must eat through to escape.

Just a thought.

I feel I must point out the difference between dork and geek in my eyes. A geek is what the average college student is, a lovable person with an odd habit of getting semi obsessed with any one thing ranging from video games to comic books or what ever can be considered geeky. A dork on the other hand is a geek that has mutated into a dick. He has let the obsession take over in matters of worldly importance and is happily willing to step over his fellow geek to get what he wants. These people may have knowledge about geeky things but is not someone you would want as a friend becuase they often come off as pompus and know-it-all-ish.

Interesting, Chun- I have the exact opposite definitions, which is why my favorite nickname for Matt is DORK! It used to drive my mother crazy, and she was always telling me not to make fun of or insult him, afraid that I'd drive away the one man nuts enough to marry me.

Don't call Matt a dork your going to hurt my ears!

Anyone who's actually played the game Dr. Lugae comes from could tell you what the nature of him, Balnab(not Belnab), and his successive forms is.

Dr. Lugae is a mad scientist. Simple as that.

Balnab is his Frankenstein-esque robot creation.

Balnab-Z is just a broken-down Balnab with Lugae at the helm controlling him like some sort of mecha. Dr. Lugae states this directly as you fight him, if the image of him sitting in Balnab's head holding levers isn't clear enough(which it is). There is no "morphing" going on whatsoever.

After you fight the battle, Lugae will be forced out of Balnab and will then morph into his true form, the Lugaborg. This is Dr. Lugae transformed by his own twisted science into a cyborg-like creature. This would be what everyone is trying to talk about, but no one seems to be aware of.

As a sidenote, Milon-Z is completely different from Balnab-Z. For starters, it's not Milon-Z, it's Milon Z. The Z. is for Zombie. Milon Z. is the undead version of Milon that appears after you kill him.

And that, folks, is the true power of a true geek.
