Actually, they're from Omaha, Nebraska. 311 is the police code for indecent exposure in that city, whence comes the band name.

I'm so glad their popularity didn't last longer than a year so I only had to suffer 311 merchandise as b-day presents for one year. My favorite 311 line is the titular: "Guns are for pussies!" :)
